The Pune Police have approached the sessions court, contesting the Juvenile Justice Board’s (JJB) decision to deny their request to try the 17-year-old accused in the fatal Porsche crash as an adult, Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray confirmed on Wednesday.
Hiray said the application was filed on August 7, arguing that the JJB’s ruling was “flawed.” A hearing date will be fixed once the matter is listed. Police sources added that the move came after receiving the district collector’s approval.
The JJB had previously ruled that the offence did not qualify as a “heinous crime.” The incident took place on May 19, 2024, when the minor, allegedly intoxicated, crashed a luxury Porsche into a motorcycle in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar, killing riders Ashwini Koshta and Aneesh Awadhia from Madhya Pradesh. The accused was granted bail by the JJB, sparking public outrage over perceived leniency.
The case has been marred by allegations that the underage driver was served alcohol at a bar and that his parents, along with doctors, attempted to swap his blood samples with his mother’s to shield him from prosecution. The Supreme Court granted interim bail to the mother in April this year, while the father and doctors remain in custody.
The Pune Crime Branch has charged the juvenile with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, later adding destruction of evidence. Cases have also been registered against his parents and the involved doctors for conspiracy and evidence tampering. The matter against the minor is still pending before the JJB.
